When did the teddy bear come about?
The teddy bear came about in response to a cartoon that was made of Theodore (Teddy) Roosevelt. During his tenure in office, in 1902, Teddy went out on a hunting trip into the wilderness. A while into the trip, Teddy still had not captured any game, while the rest of his party had. An assistant, with the help of hounds and other tracked a bear and eventually tied it to a tree. The assistant brought Teddy out to the tied bear and suggested he shoot it. Teddy declined saying it was unsportsmanlike, but instructed the assistant to shoot the bear to put it out of its misery. A Washington Post cartoonist drew up a rendition of the activity, but it went through many alterations. Each of the revisions made the bear smaller and cuter, hence the stylized cuteness and form the bear takes today, as if it were almost hugging a tree. Commercialization of the bear began the next year as the bears were sold as Teddy’s bear. In the course of its millennial history the apostrophe has been drop, but the tradition retained.

What are the stabilizing uses for teddy bears?
Some studies have shown that giving a child a teddy bear in a traumatic situation causes them to calm down and recess into a more submerged emotional state because of the closeness they can be to the bear. For that reason, there are many different programs that give teddy bears to the police and fire fighting forces in order to promote the safety and efficacy of the program that was mentioned above. When the police respond to a violent crash, they will distribute the bears to the affected children and give them something positive to sit down while they navigate the shock. When fire fighters rescue and evacuate children from their homes or cabins, they will sometimes give them a teddy bear to help mitigate the impact of what they’re going through. The bear provides stability and insulation in this regard, and for that reason the cops continue to request donations as well as pass them out.
